5 Driving Tips for Absolute Beginners
Starting your driving journey can feel overwhelming — there is so much to think about at once. But most beginners struggle with the same handful of habits. Get these five right and you will build confidence far faster than you expect.
1. Hold the Wheel Correctly
Place your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. This gives you better control and leaves your arms less fatigued on longer drives. Keep a firm but relaxed grip.
2. Check Your Mirrors Every 5–8 Seconds
New drivers tend to fixate on the road directly ahead. Train yourself to glance at your left mirror, right mirror, and rear-view mirror in a regular cycle.
3. Look Far Ahead, Not Just in Front of the Bonnet
Experienced drivers scan 12–15 seconds ahead — in city traffic that is roughly the next junction or pedestrian crossing. This gives you time to react smoothly.
4. Brake Early and Gently
Whenever you see a red light or a slowing vehicle ahead, begin releasing the accelerator early and apply the brake progressively.
5. Adjust Your Seat and Mirrors Before You Move
Spend 30 seconds before every drive adjusting seat distance, headrest, and all three mirrors before the engine starts.
